3 Reasons to Give Your Feline Friend a Catio This Fall

As the weather gets cooler and the days shorter, you may be tempted to keep your kitty indoors more often. After all, it's much easier to let Fluffy sleep on your lap when she's not trying to dart out the door every time someone comes in. However, there are some good reasons to continue giving your feline friend some time outdoors even as the temperature drops. A catio—a caged patio or enclosed porch—provides a safe place for your cat to enjoy fresh air and watch the world go by without being able to run off or get into mischief. Here are three reasons why you should consider building a catio for your cat this fall.

1. Indoors Isn't Good for Their Health Either

While it's true that cats are less active in colder weather, that doesn't mean they don't need to burn off some energy. In fact, if your cat is cooped up indoors all the time, she may start putting on weight and become lazy. Additionally, being indoors all the time can be bad for your kitty's mental health; just like people, cats can get depressed if they don't have enough stimulation. A catio gives them a chance to explore and play without having to worry about cars or other dangers.

2. Catios Keep Them from Destroying Your Furniture

If you've ever come home to find that your cat has used your favorite chair as a scratching post, you know how destructive indoor cats can be. Not only is this behavior unsightly, but it can also be expensive to repair. A catio gives them a place to scratch and climb without damaging your belongings.

3. You'll Worry Less When They're Outdoors

It's natural to worry about your pet when they're outdoors because there are so many potential dangers—cars, other animals, toxins, etc. However, if you build a secure catio, you'll know that they're in a safe space where they can't get into trouble. This will give you peace of mind when you have to leave them alone during the day while you're at work or running errands.

A catio is a great way to make sure your feline friend stays safe and healthy as the weather gets cooler and the days shorter. It also provides an opportunity for them to explore and play without causing damage to your belongings or worrying you when they're outdoors. So take some time this fall to build a secure space for your kitty to enjoy the great outdoors!
